Citric acid-modified graphite-like carbon nitride materials (GCN-zCA) were synthetized by thermal copolymerization of dicyandiamide with different amounts of citric acid (z = between 5 and 25 mg). The resulting materials presented surface porosity, defective polymeric structure, and enhanced visible light absorption in the 450-700 nm range, attributed to the existence of mid-gap states and n-pi* electronic transitions. All the modified catalysts presented high selectivity (>99 %) towards the conversion of p-anisyl alcohol into p-anisaldehyde under visible-LED irradiation, the best performing photocatalyst (GCN-20CA) reaching 63 % yield (contrasting with 22 % obtained with bulk GCN) after 240 min reaction. GCN-20CA was also applied for hydrogen generation from water splitting. The modified material practically duplicated the hydrogen production when compared to bulk GCN (75 and 44 mu mol H-2 evolved in three hours, respectively), by using platinum nanoparticles as co-catalyst and EDTA as sacrificial electron donor. Moreover, p-anisyl alcohol was successfully used as sacrificial agent for water splitting, with simultaneous production of p-anisaldehyde and H-2. Reusability tests showed that GCN-20CA remained stable in a series of consecutive runs both for p-anisaldehyde synthesis and hydrogen production.

We report the synthesis of a vanadium(V) complex characterized by FT-IR and H-1 NMR spectroscopy. The structure of the complex was established by single crystal X-ray crystallography. We also carried out the catalytic oxidation of benzyl alcohol, hetero-aryl alcohols and propargylic alcohols. Tandem synthesis of oximes from alcohols were also carried out using our vanadium(V) complex. The newly synthesized complex acts as a catalyst for oxidation reactions and tandem synthesis of oxime from alcohols. [GRAPHICS] .

Aim Kawasaki disease (KD) is one of the most common causes of acquired cardiac disease in children in high-income countries. The incidence of coronary artery disease (CAD), despite treatment with intravenous immunoglobulin, ranges from 5 to 20%. Determining risk factors for CAD may assist with management and reduce long-term complications. Methods Retrospective data were collected for all patients presenting to the Women’s and Children’s Hospital with a discharge diagnosis of KD over a 10.5-year period, from 2007 to 2018. Results A total of 141 patients were included in the review; 101 patients fulfilled complete criteria for KD; 25 incomplete criteria and 15 did not meet criteria but were treated for KD. CAD was present in 27.7% of all patients, ranging from ectasia to giant aneurysms based on Z-scores and echocardiogram descriptions. Medium to large aneurysms accounted for 8.5% of all patients with suspected KD. Patients with CAD were more likely to: fulfil incomplete criteria (odds ratio (OR) 4.3, 95% confidence interval (CI) 1.7-10.8, P = 0.0027), be less than 12 months of age (OR 11.38, 95% CI 2.94-44.11, P = 0.0001), have CRP > 100 (OR 2.8, 95% CI 1.31-6.02, P = 0.0068) and have a delay in treatment (average day of illness prior to treatment 8.89 vs. 6.78 (OR 1.19, 95% CI 1.05-1.35, P = 0.0055)). Patients with a Kobayashi score >= 4 had a higher rate of re-treatment with intravenous immunoglobulin (OR 3.16, 95% CI 1.27-7.83, P = 0.013). Conclusion Our data are consistent with previously reported risk factors, and high rates of CAD despite standard treatment.

A redox-active iminoquinone motif connected with pi-delocalized pyrene core has been reported that can perform efficient two-electron oxidation of a class of substrates. The design of the molecule was inspired by the organic redox cofactor topaquinone (TPQ), which executes amine oxidation in the enzyme, copper amine oxidase. Easy oxidation of both primary and secondary alcohols happened in the presence of catalytic KOtBu, which could reduce the ligand backbone to its iminosemiquinonate form under photoinduced conditions. Moreover, this easy oxidation of alcohols under aerobic condition could be elegantly extended to multi-component, one-pot coupling for the synthesis of quinoline and pyrimidine. This organocatalytic approach is very mild (70 degrees C, 8 h) compared to a multitude of transition-metal catalysts that have been used to prepare these heterocycles. A detailed mechanistic study proves the intermediacy of the iminosemiquinonate-type radical and a critical hydrogen atom transfer step to be involved in the dehydrogenation reaction.

Arylation of carbonyls, one of the most common approaches toward alcohols, has received tremendous attention, as alcohols are important feedstocks and building blocks in organic synthesis. Despite great progress, there is still a great gap to develop an ideal arylation method featuring mild conditions, good functional group tolerance, and readily available starting materials. We now show that electrochemical arylation can fill the gap. By taking advantage of synthetic electrochemistry, commercially available aldehydes (ketones) and benzylic alcohols can be readily arylated to provide a general and scalable access to structurally diverse alcohols (97 examples, >10 gram-scale). More importantly, convergent paired electrolysis, the ideal but challenging electrochemical technology, was employed to transform low-value alcohols into more useful alcohols. Detailed mechanism study suggests that two plausible pathways are involved in the redox neutral alpha-arylation of benzylic alcohols.

In this content, a green approach for the ultrasound promoted in situ immobilization of Pd NPs over biodegradable chitosan/agarose modified ferrite NP (Fe3O4@CS-Agarose/Pd) is developed. The structural and physicochemical features of the material were estimated using advanced analytical techniques like FT-IR, ICP-OES, FESEM, EDS, XRD, TEM and VSM. The magnetic material was catalytically explored in the oxidation of alcohols under ultrasonic waves. Sonication had a significant role in enhancing the catalytic performance in the alcohol’s oxidation as compared to conventional heating. The heterogeneous nanocatalyst was efficiently recycled up to 10 times with nominal loss in catalytic activity. Towards the biological applications, the Fe3O4@CS-Agarose/Pd nanocomposite showed high antioxidant activities against DPPH free radicals, comparable to standard butylated hydroxytoluene (BHT). In addition, it exhibited excellent cytotoxicity in terms of % cell viability against breast adenocarcinoma (MCF7), breast carcinoma (Hs 578Bst), infiltrating ductal cell carcinoma (Hs 319.T), and metastatic carcinoma (MDA-MB-453) cell lines. The best anti-breast cancer potential of the nanocomposite was observed in Hs 319.T cell line. (C) 2021 Published by Elsevier B.V.

The dendritic ligand 2, 4, 6-tris (di-4-chlorobenzamido)-1, 3, 5-triazine3supported Zn/Cu (1:1) 4a, 2, 4, 6-tris (di-4-chlorobenzamido)-1, 3, 5-triazine3supported Zn/Cu (1:2) 4b, and 2, 4, 6-tris (di-4-chlorobenzamido)-1, 3, 5-triazine3supported Zn/Cu (2:1) 4cbimetallic nanoparticles (NPs) were synthesized successfully by following the co-complexation route in which the desired molar ratio of Zn and Cu was confirmed by the obtained results of electron diffraction X-ray and X-ray fluorescence spectroscopy analysis. The average particle size of these NPs was detected as 15-20 nm from transmission electron microscopy investigations and agglomerate spherical surface morphology was found by scanning electron microscopy, whereas the face-centered cubic structure of these bimetallic NPs was observed by X-ray diffraction assessment. Also, the formation of the ligand was proven by IR,(HNMR)-H-1,(CNMR)-C-13, and elemental analysis. Remarkably, the chemoselective oxidation of aromatic alcohols to the corresponding aldehydes or ketones at 25 min and reduction of aromatic nitro substituents to the corresponding aniline at 20 min in aqueous medium at room temperature have been studied by the most effective catalyst Zn/Cu (2:1) 4cNPs among other molar ratios of Zn/Cu (1:1)4aand Zn/Cu (1:2) 4bNPs under atmospheric air (O-2) conditions with good to excellent yields. This green catalytic approach of Zn/Cu (2:1) 4cNPs catalytic was easily recovered by simple filtration and recycled at least five consecutive runs without a noticeable loss of its catalytic effectiveness.

Bark from the Handroanthus impetiginosus (Mart. ex DC.) Mattos (Bignoniaceae) tree has long been used in traditional South American healing practises to treat inflammation. However, its anti-inflammatory activity has not been closely examined. Here we use chemical extraction, qualitative phytochemical examination, toxicity testing and quantitative examination of anti-inflammatory activity on human cells ex vivo. All extracts were found to be nontoxic. We found different extracts exhibited unique cytokine profiles with some extracts outperforming a positive control used in the clinic. These results verify the immunomodulatory activity of Handroanthus impetiginosus (Mart. ex DC.) Mattos (Bignoniaceae) tree bark-derived compounds. Collectively, combining a lack of toxicity and potency in human immune cells supports further fractionation and research.
