BackgroundPoor awareness of obstetric danger signs is a major contributing factor to delays in seeking obstetric care and hence to high maternal mortality and morbidity worldwide. We conducted the current study to assess the level of agreement on receipt of counseling on obstetric danger signs between direct observations of antenatal care (ANC) consultation and women’s recall in the exit interview. We also identified factors associated with pregnant women’s awareness of obstetric danger signs during pregnancy in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC)MethodsWe used data from the 2017-2018 DRC Service Provision Assessment survey. Agreement between the observation and woman’s recall was measured using Cohen’s kappa statistic and percent agreement. Multivariable Zero-Inflated Poisson (ZIP) regression was used to identify factors associated with the number of danger signs during pregnancy the woman knew.ResultsOn average, women were aware of 1.51.34 danger signs in pregnancy (range: 0 to 8). Agreement between observation and woman’s recall was 70.7%, with a positive agreement of 16.9% at the country level but ranging from 2.1% in Bandundu to 39.7% in Sud Kivu. Using multivariable ZIP analysis, the number of obstetric danger signs the women mentioned was significantly higher in multigravida women (Adj.IRR=1.38; 95% CI: 1.23-1.55), in women attending a private facility (Adj.IRR=1.15; 95% CI: 1.01-1.31), in women attending a subsequent ANC visit (Adj.IRR=1.11; 95% CI: 1.01-1.21), and in women counseled on danger signs during the ANC visit (Adj.IRR=1.19; 95% CI: 1.05-1.35). There was a regional variation in the awareness of danger signs, with the least mentioned signs in the middle and the most in the eastern provinces.ConclusionsOur findings indicated poor agreement between directly observed counseling and women’s reports that counseling on obstetric danger signs occurred during the current ANC visit. We found that province of residence, provision of counseling on obstetric danger signs, facility ownership, gravidity and the number of ANC visits were predictors of the awareness of obstetric danger signs among pregnant women. These factors should be considered when developing strategies aim at improving women’s awareness about obstetric danger signs in the DRC

The reaction of [RuCl2(p-cymene)]2 with in situ prepared Ag-N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) complexes yields a series of [RuCl2(p-cymene)(NHC)] complexes (2). All of the complexes have been characterised by elemental analysis, and 1H NMR and 13C NMR spectroscopies. These complexes have been tested for the N-alkylation of aromatic amines with arylmethyl alcohols under neat conditions in the presence of KOtBu at 120 ?C. Compounds (2) are stable and have high catalytic/selective activity for the N-alkylation reactions of primary amines to afford secondary amines.

The enhancement of reactivity inside supramolecular coordination cages has many analogies to the mode of action of enzymes, and continues to inspire the design of new catalysts for a range of reactions. However, despite being a near-ubiquitous class of reactions in organic chemistry, enhancement of the reduction of carbonyls to their corresponding alcohols remains very much underexplored in supramolecular coordination cages. Herein, we show that encapsulation of small aromatic aldehydes inside a supramolecular coordination cage allows the reduction of these aldehydes with the mild reducing agent sodium cyanoborohydride to proceed with high selectivity (ketones and esters are not reduced) and in good yields. In the absence of the cage, low pH conditions are essential for any appreciable conversion of the aldehydes to the alcohols. In contrast, the specific microenvironment inside the cage allows this reaction to proceed in bulk solution that is pH-neutral, or even basic. We propose that the cage acts to stabilise the protonated oxocarbenium ion reaction intermediates (enhancing aldehyde reactivity) whilst simultaneously favouring the encapsulation and reduction of smaller aldehydes (which fit more easily inside the cage). Such dual action (enhancement of reactivity and size-selectivity) is reminiscent of the mode of operation of natural enzymes and highlights the tremendous promise of cage architectures as selective catalysts.

We report N,N-dimethylformamide-stabilised Pd nanoparticle (Pd NP)-catalysed transfer vinylation of alcohols from vinyl ether. Pd NPs combined with bathophenanthroline exhibited high catalytic activity. This reaction proceeded with low catalyst loading and the catalyst remained effective even after many rounds of recycling. The observation of the catalyst using transmission electron microscopy and dynamic light scattering implied no deleterious aggregation of Pd NPs.

Herein, we designed and synthesized an SBA-15 supported 1-methyl-2-azaadamanane N-oxyl (1-Me-AZADO) and investigated its catalytic performance for selective oxidation of alcohols under Anelli’s conditions. The first example of immobilization of 1-Me-AZADO was very important to advance the oxgenation effectively because this supported N-oxyl has excellent catalytic activity for oxidation of alcohols to carbonyl compounds, and more importantly, it can be conveniently recovered and reused at least 6 times without significant effect on its catalytic efficiency.

Ketones are of great importance in synthesis, biology, and pharmaceuticals. This paper reports an iridium complexes-catalyzed cross-coupling of alcohols via hydrogen borrowing, affording a series of alpha-alkylated ketones in high yield (86 %-95 %) and chemoselectivities (>99 : 1). This methodology has the advantages of low catalyst loading (0.1 mol%) and environmentally benign water as the solvent. Studies have shown the amount of base has a great impact on chemoselectivities. Meanwhile, deuteration experiments show water plays an important role in accelerating the reduction of the unsaturated ketones intermediates. Remarkably, a gram-scale experiment demonstrates this methodology of iridium-catalyzed cross-coupling of alcohols has potential application in the practical synthesis of alpha-alkylated ketones.

The employment of easily affordable ruthenium(II)-complexes as pre-catalysts in the transfer hydrogenation of carbonyl compounds in deep eutectic media is described for the first time. The eutectic mixture tetrabutylammonium bromide/formic acid = 1/1 (TBABr/HCOOH = 1/1) acts both as reaction medium and hydrogen source. The addition of a base is required for the process to occur. An extensive optimization of the reaction conditions has been carried out, in terms of catalyst loading, type of complexes, H-2-donors, reaction temperature and time. The combination of the dimeric complex [RuCl(p-cymene)-mu-Cl](2) (0.01-0.05 eq.) and the ligand dppf (1,10-ferrocenediyl-bis(diphenylphosphine)ferrocene) in 1/1 molar ratio has proven to be a suitable catalytic system for the reduction of several and diverse aldehydes and ketones to their corresponding alcohols under mild conditions (40-60 degrees C) in air, showing from moderate to excellent tolerability towards different functional groups (halogen, cyano, nitro, phenol). The reduction of imine compounds to their corresponding amine derivatives was also studied. In addition, the comparison between the results obtained in TBABr/HCOOH and in organic solvents suggests a non-innocent effect of the DES medium during the process. (C) 2021 Elsevier Ltd.
