Insight: High intensity and activity carrier granular sludge cultured using polyvinyl alcohol/chitosan and polyvinyl alcohol/chitosan/iron gel beads

The newly developed carrier granular sludge (CGS) with polyvinyl alcohol/chitosan (PVA/CS) and PVA/CS/Fe gel beads assistance showed higher intensity and anammox activity than the natural granular sludge (NGS). Through comprehensive investigation, it was found: (1) the gel beads provided a stable framework of cells entangle with extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) to enhance the sludge intensity. In this framework, beta-polysaccharides are distributed at the edge of CGS as a protection layer, a-polysaccharides and proteins are spread in the whole cross-section as backbones, and Fe2+/Fe3+ in CGS-PVA/CS/Fe act as bridges to link with the negatively charged groups on bacterial surfaces and proteins. (2) The porous gel beads satisfied a relatively unimpeded mass transfer. Thus, the sludge activity, microbe’s metabolism, membrane transportation and environmental adaption in CGS were apparently improved. The results improved the understanding about the advantages of the CGS and indicated their possible application in full-scale anammox processes.

Chronic ethanol exposure differentially alters neuronal function in the medial prefrontal cortex and dentate gyrus

Alterations in the function of prefrontal cortex (PFC) and hippocampus have been implicated in underlying the relapse to alcohol seeking behaviors in humans and animal models of moderate to severe alcohol use disorders (AUD). Here we used chronic intermittent ethanol vapor exposure (CIE), 21d protracted abstinence following CIE (21d AB), and re-exposure to one vapor session during protracted abstinence (re-exposure) to evaluate the effects of chronic ethanol exposure on basal synaptic function, neuronal excitability and expression of key synaptic proteins that play a role in neuronal excitability in the medial PFC (mPFC) and dentate gyms (DG). CIE consistently enhanced excitability of layer 2/3 pyramidal neurons in the mPFC and granule cell neurons in the DG. In the DG, this effect persisted during 21d AB. Re-exposure did not enhance excitability, suggesting resistance to vapor-induced effects. Analysis of action potential kinetics revealed that altered afterhyperpolarization, rise time and decay time constants are associated with the altered excitability during CIE, 21d AB and reexposure. Molecular adaptations that may underlie increases in neuronal excitability under these different conditions were identified. Quantitative polymerase chain reaction of large-conductance potassium (BK) channel subunit mRNA in PFC and DG tissue homogenates did not show altered expression patterns of BK subunits. Western blotting demonstrates enhanced phosphorylation of Ca2+/calmodulin-dependent protein kinase II (CaMKII), and reduced phosphorylation of glutamate receptor GluN2A/2B subunits. These results suggest a novel relationship between activity of CaMKII and GluN receptors in the mPFC and DG, and neuronal excitability in these brain regions in the context of moderate to severe AUD.

Disseminated Histoplasmosis Infection in HIV-Negative Patients: Series Case and Literature Review

Histoplasmosis is a deep mycosis distributed worldwide and caused by Histoplasma capsulatum. Development countries and underdeveloped countries already considered an endemic disease, and its etiology comes from fungi located in soil contaminated with bird and bat droppings. Habits such as tobacco and alcohol consumption can be factors that can help to the development of disseminated histoplasmosis mainly in immunocompetent patients. Clinical manifestations can include fever, weakness, weight loss, hepatosplenomegaly, mucocutaneous lesions, and ulcer oral lesions. Oral lesions represents a commonly manifestation in the disseminated form of the disease, and it is more frequently observed in immunocompromised patients, mainly on HIV-positive patients. In this study, we presented five cases of disseminated histoplasmosis on HIVnegative patients diagnosed with lesions located in oral cavity and we performed a literature review about cases of disseminated histoplasmosis lesions in head and neck region on HIV-negative patients associating possible factors that may contribute to lesions formatting.

Epidemiology and risk of psychiatric disorders among patients with celiac disease: A population-based national study

Background and Aim Celiac disease (CD) is a chronic disorder resulting from an immune reaction to gluten in genetically predisposed individuals. Although several studies have linked CD to psychiatric diseases, there are limited data on this topic. Using a large database, we sought to describe the epidemiology of several psychiatric disorders in CD. Methods We queried a multicenter database (Explorys Inc), an aggregate of electronic health record data from 26 major integrated healthcare systems from 2016 to 2020 consisting of 360 hospitals in the USA. A cohort of patients with a Systematized Nomenclature Of Medicine – Clinical Terms diagnosis of CD was identified. Multivariate analysis was performed using Statistical Package for Social Sciences version 25. Results Of the 37 465 810 patients in the database between 2016 and 2020, there were 112 340 (0.30%) individuals with CD. When compared with patients with no history of CD, patients with CD were more likely to have a history of anxiety (odds ratio [OR]: 1.385; 95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.364-1.407), depression (OR: 1.918; 95% CI: 1.888-1.947), bipolar (OR: 1.321; 95% CI: 1.289-1.354), attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (OR: 1.753; 95% CI: 1.714-1.792), eating disorder (OR: 15.84; 95% CI: 15.533-16.154), and childhood autistic disorder (OR: 4.858; 95% CI: 3.626-6.508). Patients with CD and psychiatric conditions were more likely to be smokers, with history of alcohol and substance abuse as well as a history of personality disorder. Conclusions In this large database, patients with CD are at increased risk of having multiple psychiatric diseases including anxiety, depression, bipolar, attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder, eating disorder, and childhood autism. Individual care and referral to psychiatry when appropriate are warranted while taking care of this group of patients.

Mitigation of nivalenol using alcoholic fermentation and magnetic field application

This study aimed at evaluating mitigation of nivalenol (NIV) in alcoholic fermentation with magnetic field application (MF). Mitigation was related to both the glutathione (GSH) redox molecule and the enzyme peroxidase (PO), which were synthesized by Saccharomyces cerevisiae US-05. Conditions under evaluation were NIV (0.2 mu g mL(-1)), MF application (35 mT) and simultaneous use of mycotoxin and MF. The GSH content and the PO activity were increased when the culture contained NIV and the alcohol profile was altered after 48 h of fermentation. At the end of the alcoholic fermentation, NIV was mitigated by 56.5%. Therefore, this process is a promising method to reduce contamination by NIV, although the mycotoxin affects the chemical characteristics of the final product.

Effect of Mouthrinses on Water Sorption and Solubility of Flouride-Releasing Restorative Materials

Objective: This study aimed to investigate water sorption/solubility behavior of glass ionomer cement-based-containing restorative materials. Methods: A total of 21 specimens for each material (Riva Self Cure. Riva Light Cure, GCP Glass Fill) were prepared using a teflon ring (10×2 mm). These specimens were stored in a desiccator for 24 hours at 37 +/- 1 degrees C and the weight of each sample was measured using a sensitive balance. Afterwards, the specimens were stored in an incubator containing distilled water, mouthrinse with alcohol, and mouthrinse without alcohol at 37 +/- 1 degrees C for one day. The specimens were later dried to a constant mass in a desiccator, and each specimen was measured using a digital electronic caliper. Data were statistically analyzed (p<0.05). Results: Data were evaluated using one-way ANOVA and post-hoc Tukey tests. Water sorption values were found to be significantly higher for the resin-modified glass ionomer cement group than for the high-viscosity glass ionomcr cement (HVGIC) group in all the three different media (p<0.05). HVGIC material showed similar water sorption values for all three media. Conclusion: Compositions of restorative materials play key roles in their water sorption/solubility in different areas. Hydrogen-bond network in liquid methanol as studied by neutron Scattering, DFT calculations and molecular dynamics simulations

Neutron scattering experiments were carried out on fully deuterated liquid methanol at room temperature and atmospheric pressure. Experimental data were analyzed to drive the structure factor S-M(q), the molecular form factor F-1(q) and the intermolecular pair correlation function g(L)(r). DFT calculation using the 6-311++ G(d, p) basis set was conducted to optimize some possible methanol H-bonded clusters: one dimer, two trimers and two tetramers that may describe the intermolecular arrangement in the liquid. Natural bond orbital (NBO) and atoms-in molecules (AIM) analyses have been performed to characterize the hydrogen-bond interactions in the more probable arrays in the liquid. MD simulations are performed using KBFF and OPLS-AA rigid and flexible potentials. Theoretical results fairly agree with experimental ones and clearly highlight the strong H-bond between methyl and hydroxyl groups. (C) 2020 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
