H-ficolin recognizes patterns on microorganisms and stressed cells and can activate the lectin pathway of the complement system. We aimed to assess H-ficolin in relation to the progression of diabetic kidney disease (DKD), all-cause mortality, diabetes-related mortality, and cardiovascular events. Event rates per 10-unit H-ficolin-increase were compared in an observational follow-up of 2,410 individuals with type 1 diabetes from the FinnDiane Study. DKD progression occurred in 400 individuals. The unadjusted hazard ratio (HR) for progression was 1.29 (1.18-1.40) and 1.16 (1.05-1.29) after adjustment for diabetes duration, sex, HbA(1c), systolic blood pressure, and smoking status. After adding triglycerides to the model, the HR decreased to 1.07 (0.97-1.18). In all, 486 individuals died, including 268 deaths of cardiovascular causes and 192 deaths of complications to diabetes. HRs for all-cause mortality and cardiovascular mortality were 1.13 (1.04-1.22) and 1.05 (0.93-1.17), respectively, in unadjusted analyses. These estimates lost statistical significance in adjusted models. However, the unadjusted HR for diabetes-related mortality was 1.19 (1.05-1.35) and 1.18 (1.02-1.37) with the most stringent adjustment level. Our results, therefore, indicate that H-ficolin predicts diabetes-related mortality, but neither all-cause mortality nor fatal/non-fatal cardiovascular events. Furthermore, H-ficolin is associated with DKD progression, however, not independently of the fully adjusted model.

The traditional Staudinger/aza-Wittig reaction represents one of the most powerful tools for imine formation. However, for this multistep procedure, the sacrificial phosphine has to be used, resulting in difficulties in the purification process and waste disposal at the same time. Here, we report a redox-neutral azide-alcohol imination methodology enabled by a base-metal nickel PN3 pincer catalyst. The one-step, waste-free, and high atom-economical features highlight its advantages further. Moreover, mechanistic insight suggests a non-metal-ligand cooperation pathway based on the observation of an intermediate and density functional theory calculations.

In this study, a commercially available homogeneous pincer-type complex, Ru-Macho, was directly heterogenized via the Lewis acid-catalyzed Friedel-Crafts reaction using dichloromethane as the cross-linker to obtain a heterogeneous, pincer-type Ru porous organometallic polymer (Ru-Macho-POMP) with a high surface area. Notably, Ru-Macho-POMP was demonstrated to be an efficient heterogeneous catalyst for the chemoselective hydrogenation of alpha,beta-unsaturated carbonyl compounds to their corresponding allylic alcohols using cinnamaldehyde as a model compound. The Ru-Macho-POMP catalyst showed a high turnover frequency (TOF = 920 h(-1)) and a high turnover number (TON = 2750), with high chemoselectivity (99%) and recyclability during the selective hydrogenation of alpha, beta-unsaturated carbonyl compounds.

Borrowing hydrogen from alcohols, storing it on a catalyst and subsequent transfer of the hydrogen from the catalyst to an in situ generated imine is the hallmark of a transition metal mediated catalytic N-alkylation of amines. However, such a borrowing hydrogen mechanism with a transition metal free catalytic system which stores hydrogen molecules in the catalyst backbone is yet to be established. Herein, we demonstrate that a phenalenyl ligand can imitate the role of transition metals in storing and transferring hydrogen molecules leading to borrowing hydrogen mediated alkylation of anilines by alcohols including a wide range of substrate scope. A close inspection of the mechanistic pathway by characterizing several intermediates through various spectroscopic techniques, deuterium labelling experiments, and DFT study concluded that the phenalenyl radical based backbone sequentially adds H+, H and an electron through a dearomatization process which are subsequently used as reducing equivalents to the C-N double bond in a catalytic fashion.

A series of metal niobates (MNb2O6, M = Zn2+, Ni2+ and Co2+) were prepared from H-niobate precursor under hydrothermal conditions, in which amino groups of L-lysine play an important role. Au nanoparticles were then supported on these niobates by NaBH4 reduction method. More importantly, the strong interaction between Au nanoparticles and ZnNb2O6 generates negatively charged Au which can activate molecular oxygen to form the exclusive high-active peroxide (NbOOAu) species on Au/ZnNb2O6 surface under visible light irradiation, observed in situ by diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectra (DRIFTS). The optimal NbOOAu species produced on the surface of Au/ZnNb2O6 can remove the H atom of the methylene group (-CH2-) of benzyl alcohol, leading to high photocatalytic activity of Au/ZnNb2O6 compared with Au/NiNb2O6 and Au/CoNb2O6. This modulation of interaction of Au and niobates for the activation of molecular oxygen provides a new prospect for highly selective photocatalytic oxidation reactions.

Selective hydrogenation of the carbonyl functional group of alpha,beta-unsaturated carbonyl compounds affords industrially important allylic alcohols. However, achieving the selective reduction of the carbonyl group in the presence of the activated olefinic group is challenging. Therefore, the development of a highly chemoselective, efficient, and recyclable catalyst for this transformation is greatly desirable from the industrial and environmental viewpoints. In this study, a Ru-immobilized bisphosphine-based porous organic polymer (Ru@PP-POP) was used as an efficient heterogeneous catalyst for chemoselective hydrogenation of cinnamaldehyde (CAL) to cinnamyl alcohol with high chemoselectivity (98%) and excellent recyclability. To the best of our knowledge, the catalyst, Ru@PP-POP showed a high turnover number (970) and a high turnover frequency (240h(1)) which is the best activity obtained using a phosphine based heterogeneous Ru-catalyst in this transformation. Our laboratory has developed catalysts based on earth abundant titanium for asymmetric reactions including intramolecular hydroamination. Previously, we showed that titanium complexes of imine diol ligands showed improved enantioselectivity relative to complexes with bidentate amino alcohol ligands. As the catalyst with the highest selectivity had di-tert-butyl substitution, we sought to increase the steric protection by preparing three new ligands with diaryl substitution. These ligands were readily prepared in two steps: first, synthesis of diaryl substituted salicylaldehydes by a Suzuki coupling and second, a Schiff base condensation with a chiral amino alcohol. After characterizing the ligands, in situ hydroamination/cyclization with 6-methyl-hepta-4,5-dienylamine was carried out at temperatures ranging from 105 degrees C to 135 degrees C to give exclusively 2-(2-methyl-propenyl)-pyrrolidine with enantioselectivity up to 22 %ee. Unexpected dimerization of the catalyst resulted in reduced activity, so the reaction required a catalyst loading of 10-20%. (C) 2021 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Two high-resolution mass spectrometers (HRMS) with different analyzer technology, Orbitrap and hybrid quadrupole time-of-flight (QTOF), were compared with a low-resolution mass spectrometer, quadrupole, to analyse a set of 35 difficult allergens. These difficult allergens are commonly coeluted fragrance allergens with matrix compounds, using standard gas chromatography-mass spectrometer conditions, from the extended list of the Scientific Committee on Consumer Safety (SCCS). Although the fundamental role of chromatographic separation has been demonstrated many times, the aim of this work is to demonstrate the benefits of high-resolution. The added value of high-resolution was illustrated in both a qualitative and a quantitative way. For qualitative aspect, the high resolution extracted ion signals of these two detectors were compared with the low-resolution extracted ion signals. About 50% of the coeluted cases observed with the low-resolution detector are easily resolved by the two high-resolution detectors. For the quantitative aspect, an accuracy profile methodology and a performance metric were used to propose an overall evaluation. The Orbitrap mass spectrometer demonstrated a better overall performance, while the QTOF presented similar or even lower quantification performances than the quadrupole on the set of analysed fragrances.

Hydrogen production can be promoted by replacing sluggish oxygen evolution reaction (OER) with a thermodynamically more favorable reaction, the primary oxidation reaction of benzyl alcohol to benzaldehyde. On a Bi2MoO6@TiO(2)NTA photocathode, the conversion of benzyl alcohol to benzaldehyde is realized with the selectivity of 100 %. This is originated from enhanced adsorption and activation of benzyl alcohol on this photoanode, as confirmed from tested by in situ FTIR techniques. The electrons generated during such a controllable and selective primary oxidation reaction is then utilized as the source for synergistical hydrogen production. The amount of generated hydrogen is then 5.5 times higher than that when OER is used. The efficiency for such hydrogen production is as high as 85 %. The proposed strategy combines solar energy and biomass for the efficient production of the valuable raw material – benzaldehyde as well as green energy source – hydrogen.
