A series of metal niobates (MNb2O6, M = Zn2+, Ni2+ and Co2+) were prepared from H-niobate precursor under hydrothermal conditions, in which amino groups of L-lysine play an important role. Au nanoparticles were then supported on these niobates by NaBH4 reduction method. More importantly, the strong interaction between Au nanoparticles and ZnNb2O6 generates negatively charged Au which can activate molecular oxygen to form the exclusive high-active peroxide (NbOOAu) species on Au/ZnNb2O6 surface under visible light irradiation, observed in situ by diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectra (DRIFTS). The optimal NbOOAu species produced on the surface of Au/ZnNb2O6 can remove the H atom of the methylene group (-CH2-) of benzyl alcohol, leading to high photocatalytic activity of Au/ZnNb2O6 compared with Au/NiNb2O6 and Au/CoNb2O6. This modulation of interaction of Au and niobates for the activation of molecular oxygen provides a new prospect for highly selective photocatalytic oxidation reactions.

Herein, we report a combination of pyrenedione (PD) and KO’Bu to achieve facile alcohol dehydrogenation under visible-light excitation, where aerobic oxygen is utilized as the terminal oxidant. The resulting carbonyl compound can be easily converted to vinyl nitriles in a single-pot reaction, at 60 degrees C in 6-8 h. This environmentally benign, organocatalytic approach has distinct advantages over transition-metal-catalyzed a-olefination of nitriles, which often operate at a significantly higher temperature for an extended reaction time.

A green method for the oxidation of alcohols to carboxylic acids was developed using a novel co-catalytic system based on gold, silver, and copper catalysts. This reaction system was conducted under atmospheric oxygen in water and mild conditions to selectively oxidize 5-hydroxymethylfurfural to 2,5-furandicarboxylic acid, as a building block for polyethylene furanoate, which is a 100% bio-based, future alternative to the petroleum-based polyethylene terephthalate. Furthermore, various primary alcohols were conveniently oxidized to their corresponding carboxylic acids in up to quantitative yields.

A redox-active iminoquinone motif connected with pi-delocalized pyrene core has been reported that can perform efficient two-electron oxidation of a class of substrates. The design of the molecule was inspired by the organic redox cofactor topaquinone (TPQ), which executes amine oxidation in the enzyme, copper amine oxidase. Easy oxidation of both primary and secondary alcohols happened in the presence of catalytic KOtBu, which could reduce the ligand backbone to its iminosemiquinonate form under photoinduced conditions. Moreover, this easy oxidation of alcohols under aerobic condition could be elegantly extended to multi-component, one-pot coupling for the synthesis of quinoline and pyrimidine. This organocatalytic approach is very mild (70 degrees C, 8 h) compared to a multitude of transition-metal catalysts that have been used to prepare these heterocycles. A detailed mechanistic study proves the intermediacy of the iminosemiquinonate-type radical and a critical hydrogen atom transfer step to be involved in the dehydrogenation reaction.

A modified C-18 column (Silpr-2MI-C18) was prepared using 2-methylindole and C-18 reagent. The extent of C-18 hydrocarbon chain, conjugative rings and anion exchange site provided multiple retention mechanisms, including reversed-phase liquid chromatography (RPLC), pi-pi interaction, hydrophilic interaction liquid chromatography (HILIC) and anion exchange chromatography (AEC). The separation of protected amino acids was investigated on the commercial C-18 and Silpr-2MI-C18 columns, while the chromatographic conditions, including methanol content and pH of the mobile phase, were studied. The separation arrangement of the hydrophilic amino acids was different on the Silpr-2MI-C18 column compared to the commercial C-18 column under RPLC mode. Furthermore, these amino acids were separated on the Silpr-2MI-C18 column under HILIC mode. The modified C-18 column was employed to separate amino acids, alkylbenzenes and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons under RPLC mode and inorganic anion under AEC mode. The results confirm that this new stationary phase of RPLC/HILIC/AEC has multiple interactions with different analytes. Effective retention of biological samples was found on the Silpr-2MI-C18 column by comparing the results obtained from the commercial C-18 column.

We report the synthesis of a vanadium(V) complex characterized by FT-IR and H-1 NMR spectroscopy. The structure of the complex was established by single crystal X-ray crystallography. We also carried out the catalytic oxidation of benzyl alcohol, hetero-aryl alcohols and propargylic alcohols. Tandem synthesis of oximes from alcohols were also carried out using our vanadium(V) complex. The newly synthesized complex acts as a catalyst for oxidation reactions and tandem synthesis of oxime from alcohols. [GRAPHICS] .

Aim Kawasaki disease (KD) is one of the most common causes of acquired cardiac disease in children in high-income countries. The incidence of coronary artery disease (CAD), despite treatment with intravenous immunoglobulin, ranges from 5 to 20%. Determining risk factors for CAD may assist with management and reduce long-term complications. Methods Retrospective data were collected for all patients presenting to the Women’s and Children’s Hospital with a discharge diagnosis of KD over a 10.5-year period, from 2007 to 2018. Results A total of 141 patients were included in the review; 101 patients fulfilled complete criteria for KD; 25 incomplete criteria and 15 did not meet criteria but were treated for KD. CAD was present in 27.7% of all patients, ranging from ectasia to giant aneurysms based on Z-scores and echocardiogram descriptions. Medium to large aneurysms accounted for 8.5% of all patients with suspected KD. Patients with CAD were more likely to: fulfil incomplete criteria (odds ratio (OR) 4.3, 95% confidence interval (CI) 1.7-10.8, P = 0.0027), be less than 12 months of age (OR 11.38, 95% CI 2.94-44.11, P = 0.0001), have CRP > 100 (OR 2.8, 95% CI 1.31-6.02, P = 0.0068) and have a delay in treatment (average day of illness prior to treatment 8.89 vs. 6.78 (OR 1.19, 95% CI 1.05-1.35, P = 0.0055)). Patients with a Kobayashi score >= 4 had a higher rate of re-treatment with intravenous immunoglobulin (OR 3.16, 95% CI 1.27-7.83, P = 0.013). Conclusion Our data are consistent with previously reported risk factors, and high rates of CAD despite standard treatment.

alpha-Alkylation of methyldiarylphosphine oxides with (hetero)arylmethyl alcohols was performed under nickel catalysis. Various arylmethyl and heteroarylmethyl alcohols can be used in this transformation. A series of methyldiarylphosphine oxides were alkylated with 30-90% yields. Functional groups on the aromatic rings of methyldiarylphosphine oxides or arylmethyl alcohols including OMe, NMe2, SMe, CF3, Cl, and F groups can be tolerated. The conditions are also suitable for the alpha-alkylation reaction of dialkyl methylphosphonates.
