Barros, Kallyne A. published the artcileDiurnal patterns of growth and transient reserves of sink and source tissues are affected by cold nights in barley, Safety of (S)-2-hydroxysuccinic acid, the main research area is Hordeum diurnal pattern growth cold night malate carbon; EARLY FLOWERING 3; barley growth; carbon metabolism; circadian clock; cold; diurnal metabolism; fructans; malate; starch; sucrose.

Barley is described to mostly use sucrose for night carbon requirements. To understand how the transient carbon is accumulated and utilized in response to cold, barley plants were grown in a combination of cold days and/or nights. Both daytime and night cold reduced growth. Sucrose was the main carbohydrate supplying growth at night, representing 50-60% of the carbon consumed. Under warm days and nights, starch was the second contributor with 26% and malate the third with 15%. Under cold nights, the contribution of starch was severely reduced, due to an inhibition of its synthesis, including under warm days, and malate was the second contributor to C requirements with 24-28% of the total amount of carbon consumed. We propose that malate plays a critical role as an alternative carbon source to sucrose and starch in barley. Hexoses, malate, and sucrose mobilization and starch accumulation were affected in barley elf3 clock mutants, suggesting a clock regulation of their metabolism, without affecting growth and photosynthesis however. Altogether, our data suggest that the mobilization of sucrose and malate and/or barley growth machinery are sensitive to cold.

Wang, Yunpeng published the artcileBioinspired Construction of Artifcial Cardiac Muscles Based on Liquid Crystal Elastomer Fibers, Name: Pentaerythritol tetra(3-mercaptopropionate), the main research area is artificial cardiac muscle liquid crystal elastomer fiber arterial blood.

Human muscles, including skeletal, smooth, and cardiac muscles, are able to perform diverse deformations and execute complex biofunctions stimulated by nerve signals. Similarly, liquid crystal elastomer (LCE), which can respond to external stimuli with large and reversible deformations, demonstrates superior advantages to mimic nature muscles to fabricate artifcial muscles. Till now, LCE has been utilized to simulate deformations and related functions of skeletal and smooth muscles. However, limited by the existing fabrication strategy, employing LCE to mimic the motion of cardiac muscles and further realizing the structure-determined pumping functions, is still an open challenge. Learning from the specifc spatial arrangements and synergistic actuation of cardiac muscle fibers within human heart, a simple and general strategy to construct artifcial cardiac muscles with LCE fbers is proposed. In this work, LCE fbers with similar modulus and actuation behavior to muscle fibers are fabricated and spatially arranged in biol. architectures as cardiac muscle fibers. As a result, artifcial cardiac muscles are constructed and are able to perform simultaneous contraction and torsion motions, realizing heart-pumping functions. This general strategy should be also applicable for other smart materials to conduct challenging tasks.

Gyorgy, Zsuzsanna published the artcileDifferentiating Thymus vulgaris chemotypes with ISSR molecular markers, HPLC of Formula: 124-76-5, the main research area is ISSR mol marker thymus vulgaris chemotype genetic diversity.

Common thyme (Thymus vulgaris L.) is a Mediterranean evergreen shrub of the Lamiaceae that shows chem. polymorphism in its natural populations. In Mediterranean habitats six basic chemotypes have been described according to the main component in its essential oil: thymol, carvacrol, linalool, geraniol, α-terpineol, thuyanol-4, of which the thymol chemotype is widely used in cultivation and as a spice. In this study ten selected clones were analyzed in terms of chem. composition of the volatile oil and genetic fingerprint. The study question was whether individual chemotypes can be distinguished by mol. markers. Chem. composition was analyzed by GC-MS, and for assessing the genetic polymorphism ISSR marker system was chosen as it is reliable and easy to use even in case of less studied species. The studied T. vulgaris clones represented five different chemotypes and could be distinguished using 12 ISSR primers. Clones belonging to the thymol chemotype showed the most distinct separation The study shows the potential of using mol. markers in breeding and selection of T. vulgaris, being able to differentiate different chemotypes.

Ramadhan, K. published the artcileFreeze-thaw stability of duck surimi-like materials with different cryoprotectants added, Category: alcohols-buliding-blocks, the main research area is freezing thawing duck surimi stability cryoprotectant.

The effect of the addition of different cryoprotectants on the freeze-thaw stability of duck surimi-like material (DSLM) was tested. A 6% (wt/wt) low-sweetness cryoprotectant (i.e., polydextrose, trehalose, lactitol, or palatinit) was added to a 3-kg portion of DSLM, and the mixture was subjected to freeze-thaw cycles during 4 mo of frozen storage. The DSLM with no cryoprotectant added (control) and with a 6% sucrose-sorbitol blend (high-sweetness cryoprotectant) added also were tested. The polydextrose-added sample had the highest water-holding capacity among the sample types tested (P < 0.05), and it retained its higher value during frozen storage. The protein solubility of the cryoprotectant-added samples decreased significantly (P < 0.05) from 58.99 to 59.60% at initial frozen storage (0 mo) to 48.60 to 54.61% at the end of the experiment (4 mo). The gel breaking force of all samples significantly decreased (P < 0.05) at 1 mo; this breaking force then stabilized after further frozen storage for the cryoprotectant-added samples, whereas it continued to decrease in the control samples. Gel deformation fluctuated during frozen storage and was significantly lower (P < 0.05) at the end of experiment than at the beginning. The presence of cryoprotectants reduced the whiteness of DSLM. Samples containing polydextrose, trehalose, lactitol, and palatinit were able to retain the protein solubility, gel breaking force, and deformation of DSLM better than control samples after 4 mo of frozen storage and exposure to freeze-thaw cycles. The effects of these low-sweetness cryoprotectants are comparable to those of sucrose-sorbitol, thus, these sugars could be used as alternatives in protecting surimi-like materials during frozen storage. Zhou, Yumei published the artcilePlasma metabolites and gut microbiota are associated with T cell Imbalance in BALB/c model of eosinophilic asthma, Application of (S)-2-hydroxysuccinic acid, the main research area is metabolite immunity eosinophilic allergy asthma; Tcell imbalance; drug treatment; eosinophilic asthma; gut microbiota; plasma metabolites.

The pathogenesis of allergic asthma is complex, it is usually caused by immune system imbalance. Th1, Th2, regulatory T cells (Treg) and T helper 17 (Th17) cells have an important role in the pathogenesis of eosinophilic asthma. Yet, the exact role of Th1, Th2, Treg and Th17 cells in eosinophilic asthmatic disease is not fully understood. This study used an untargeted plasma metabolomics combine 16S rDNA technol. to identify new biomarkers of plasma metabolites and gut microbiota in ovalbumin-induced eosinophilic allergic asthma in BALB/c mice to further explore the biomarkers in regulating the immune balance or the immune response. We discovered that malate, L-dihydroorotate were associated with Th1/Th2 and Treg/Th17 cells balance, imidazoleacetic acid was associated with Th1/Th2 cell balance, 1,5-anhydro-d-sorbitol was associated with Treg/Th17 cell balance. The results also found that genus Candidatus Arthromitus of gut microbiota were associated with Th1/2, Treg/Th17 balance, genus Ruminiclostridium 6, they were all associated with Th1/2 and Treg/Th17 cell balance, while the gut microbiota were not associated with penh value which reflect airway hyperresponsiveness (AHR) in the eosinophilic asthma mice model. Interestingly, the plasma metabolite biomarkers of malate, L-dihydroorotate are associated with genus Ruminiclostridium 6, they were all associated with Th1/2 and Treg/Th17 cell balance, while imidazoleacetic acid is associated with genus Ruminiclostridium 6 which is associated with Th1/2 balance. Among the differential plasma metabolites, 1,5-anhydro-d-sorbitol is associated with genus Ruminiclostridium6 and genus Candidatus Arthromitus. Among them, malate participate in the T cell activation, T cell differentiation and activation may be a new research direction in eosinophilic allergic asthma. We firstly study the gut microbiota and plasma metabolites markers of immune balance in eosinophilic asthma in mice model, laying a foundation for drug treatment in eosinophilic allergic asthma.
