Two new oxovanadium and dioxomolybdenum Schiff base complexes, [VvO(L)(OCH3)(CH3OH)] and [MoVIO2(L) (CH2CH3OH)], were synthesized by treating an ONO-donor type Schiff base ligand (H2L) derived by condensation of 5-nitrosalicylaldehyde and nicotinic hydrazide with oxo and dioxo acetylacetonate salts of vanadium and molybdenum, [VO(acac)2 and MoO2(acac)2], respectively. The synthesized ligand and complexes were characterized by various spectroscopic techniques like FT-IR, multinuclear (1H, 13C) NMR, elemental analysis and the most authentic single crystal X-ray diffraction analysis. In both complexes the geometry around the central metal ions was distorted octahedral as revealed by the data collected from diffraction studies. Theoretical calculation of the synthesized compounds were carried out by DFT as well as TD-DFT using B3LYP method by employing the Def2-TZVP basis set. The findings of theoretical data indicated that the calculated results are in accordance with the experimental findings. Moreover, the catalytic efficiencies of both complexes were investigated by oxidizing the benzylic alcohols in the presence of urea hydrogen peroxide (UHP) in acetonitrile.

For the first time, two new oxovanadium and dioxomolybdenum Schiff base complexes, VOL(OMe) and MoO2L, were synthesized through the reaction of a ONO tridentate Schiff base ligand (H2L) derived from the condensation of 5-bromosalicylaldehyde and nicotinic hydrazide with oxo and dioxo acetylacetonate salts of vanadium and molybdenum, [VO(acac)(2) and MoO2(acac)2], respectively. The synthesized ligand and complexes were characterized by various spectroscopic techniques like FT-IR, H-1 NMR, C-13 NMR, elemental analysis (CHN) and the most authentic single crystal X-ray diffraction analysis (SC-XRD). The geometry around the central metal ion in MoO2L was distorted octahedral as revealed by the data collected from diffraction studies. Non-covalent interactions that are responsible for crystal packing are explored by Hirshfeld surface analysis. Theoretical calculations of the synthesized compounds, carried out by DFT at B3LYP/Def2-TZVP level of theory, indicated that the calculated results are in agreement with the experimental findings. Moreover, the catalytic activities of both complexes were investigated for the selective oxidation of benzylic alcohols using urea hydrogen peroxide (UHP) in acetonitrile. (C) 2021 Elsevier Ltd. A series of copper sulfide (CS) nanoparticles (NPs) were synthesized just by varying the amount of the sulfur precursor and have been explored for the first time as a three-way heterogeneous catalyst in the photocatalytic oxidation of a number of aromatic alcohols, photocatalytic degradation and the reduction of water pollutants, and the facile synthesis of pharmaceutically important moiety 4-aryl-NH-1,2,3-triazoles. The green and novel protocol was successfully developed for the synthesis of covellite (CuS, Cu2+) and the covellite-villamaninite (CuS-CuS2) (copper in Cu2+, Cu1+) phases of copper sulfide, employing EDTA both as the chelating and capping agent via a simple precipitation method at room temperature using water as the solvent. A blue shift in the absorption spectra and band gap in the range of 2.02-2.07 eV prompted the investigation of the as-synthesized CS nanoparticles as the photocatalyst under visible light irradiation. In the absence of any oxidizing or reducing agent, covellite CuS nanoparticles showed the highest photocatalytic efficiency for the degradation of methylene blue (MB) and the reduction of carcinogenic and mutagenic Cr(vi) to non-toxic Cr(iii). Interestingly, the mixed phase of CS (CuS-CuS2), where Cu is present in both +1 and +2 oxidation states, was found to be the most efficient catalyst compared to CuS toward the visible light-mediated selective oxidation of various benzyl alcohols to their corresponding aldehydes. However, in the synthesis of substituted NH-1,2,3-triazoles, single-phase CS nanoparticles (i.e., CuS) provided the best catalytic result. This significant outcome certainly opens up the scope for realizing the present demand of low-cost multifunctional semiconductor nano-materials, which will have a huge impact on the economy and environment when they show more than two potential applications.

The dendritic ligand 2, 4, 6-tris (di-4-chlorobenzamido)-1, 3, 5-triazine3supported Zn/Cu (1:1) 4a, 2, 4, 6-tris (di-4-chlorobenzamido)-1, 3, 5-triazine3supported Zn/Cu (1:2) 4b, and 2, 4, 6-tris (di-4-chlorobenzamido)-1, 3, 5-triazine3supported Zn/Cu (2:1) 4cbimetallic nanoparticles (NPs) were synthesized successfully by following the co-complexation route in which the desired molar ratio of Zn and Cu was confirmed by the obtained results of electron diffraction X-ray and X-ray fluorescence spectroscopy analysis. The average particle size of these NPs was detected as 15-20 nm from transmission electron microscopy investigations and agglomerate spherical surface morphology was found by scanning electron microscopy, whereas the face-centered cubic structure of these bimetallic NPs was observed by X-ray diffraction assessment. Also, the formation of the ligand was proven by IR,(HNMR)-H-1,(CNMR)-C-13, and elemental analysis. Remarkably, the chemoselective oxidation of aromatic alcohols to the corresponding aldehydes or ketones at 25 min and reduction of aromatic nitro substituents to the corresponding aniline at 20 min in aqueous medium at room temperature have been studied by the most effective catalyst Zn/Cu (2:1) 4cNPs among other molar ratios of Zn/Cu (1:1)4aand Zn/Cu (1:2) 4bNPs under atmospheric air (O-2) conditions with good to excellent yields. This green catalytic approach of Zn/Cu (2:1) 4cNPs catalytic was easily recovered by simple filtration and recycled at least five consecutive runs without a noticeable loss of its catalytic effectiveness.

Citric acid-modified graphite-like carbon nitride materials (GCN-zCA) were synthetized by thermal copolymerization of dicyandiamide with different amounts of citric acid (z = between 5 and 25 mg). The resulting materials presented surface porosity, defective polymeric structure, and enhanced visible light absorption in the 450-700 nm range, attributed to the existence of mid-gap states and n-pi* electronic transitions. All the modified catalysts presented high selectivity (>99 %) towards the conversion of p-anisyl alcohol into p-anisaldehyde under visible-LED irradiation, the best performing photocatalyst (GCN-20CA) reaching 63 % yield (contrasting with 22 % obtained with bulk GCN) after 240 min reaction. GCN-20CA was also applied for hydrogen generation from water splitting. The modified material practically duplicated the hydrogen production when compared to bulk GCN (75 and 44 mu mol H-2 evolved in three hours, respectively), by using platinum nanoparticles as co-catalyst and EDTA as sacrificial electron donor. Moreover, p-anisyl alcohol was successfully used as sacrificial agent for water splitting, with simultaneous production of p-anisaldehyde and H-2. Reusability tests showed that GCN-20CA remained stable in a series of consecutive runs both for p-anisaldehyde synthesis and hydrogen production.

Direct oxidative coupling of alcohols with amines using a non-precious metal oxide catalyst under mild conditions is highly desirable for imine synthesis. In this work, a mesoporous Mn1ZrxOy solid solution catalyst prepared by a co-precipitation method showed excellent catalytic performance in imine synthesis from primary alcohols and amines without base additives in an air atmosphere. XRD, N-2 physisorption, H-2-TPR, O-2-TPD, EPR and XPS were comprehensively used to unravel its structural, redox and amphoteric properties that closely depended on the interaction between MnOy and ZrO2 with a variable Zr ratio. The Mn1Zr0.5Oy catalyst presented the highest fractions of Mn3+ ions and reactive oxygen species on the surface, and the highest concentrations of acidic-basic sites, which were disclosed to play important roles in activating alcohols and molecular O-2 in the rate-determining step. In the model reaction of oxidative coupling of benzyl alcohol with aniline, such enhanced features of the Mn1Zr0.5Oy catalyst can promote the intrinsic catalytic activity (iTOF of 1.87 h(-1)) and boost benzylideneaniline formation (5.56 mmol g(cat).(-1) h(-1)) based on a >99% yield at 80 degrees C respectively at a fast response. It can also work effectively at a room temperature of 30 degrees C, as well as for the gram-grade synthesis. This is one of the best results among all the MnOy-based catalysts in the literature. Moreover, this catalyst showed good stability and a wide substrate scope with good to excellent yields of imines.

Background: Placement of central venous access devices is a clinical procedure associated with some risk of adverse events and with a relevant cost. Careful choice of the device, appropriate insertion technique, and proper management of the device are well-known strategies commonly adopted to achieve an optimal clinical result. However, the environment where the procedure takes place may have an impact on the overall outcome in terms of safety and cost-effectiveness. Methods: We carried out a retrospective analysis on pediatric patients scheduled for a major neurosurgical operation, who required a central venous access device in the perioperative period. We divided the patients in two groups: in group A the central venous access device was inserted in the operating room, while in group B the central venous access device was inserted in the sedation room of our Pediatric Intensive Care Unit. We compared the two groups in terms of safety and cost-effectiveness. Results: We analyzed 47 central venous access devices in 42 children. There were no insertion-related complications. Only one catheter-related bloodstream infection was recorded, in group A. However, the costs related to central venous access device insertion were quite different: euro330-euro540 in group A versus euro105-euro135 in group B. Conclusion: In the pediatric patient candidate to a major neurosurgical operation, preoperative insertion of the central venous access device in the sedation room rather than in the operating room is less expensive and equally safe.

AgSbF6 was developed as an effective catalyst for the hydroboration of various unsaturated functionalities (nitriles, alkenes, and aldehydes). This atom-economic chemoselective protocol works effectively under low catalyst loading, base- and solvent-free moderate conditions. Importantly, this process shows excellent functional group tolerance and compatibility with structurally and electronically diverse substrates (>50 examples). Mechanistic investigations revealed that the reaction proceeds via a radical pathway. Further, the obtained N,N-diborylamines were showcased to be useful precursors for amide synthesis.

Background: Tuberculosis remains one of the most deadly infectious diseases worldwide due to the emergence of multi-drug resistance (MDR) and extensively drug resistance (XDR) strains of Mycobacterium tuberculosis (MTB). Aims: Currently, available drugs are getting resistant and toxic. Hence, there is an urgent need for the development of potent molecules to treat tuberculosis. Materials and Methods: Herein, the screening of a total of eight symmetrical 1,4-dihydropyridine (1,4-DHP) derivatives (4a-4h) was carried out for whole-cell anti-TB activity against the susceptible H37Rv and MDR strains of MTB. Results and Discussion: Most of the compounds exhibited moderate to excellent activity against the susceptible H37Rv. Moreover, the most promising compound 4f (against H37Rv) having para-trifluoromethyl phenyl group at 4-position and bis para-methoxy benzyl ester group at 3- and 5-positions of 1,4- dihydropyridine pharmacophore, exhibited no toxicity, but demonstrated weak activity against MTB strains resistant to isoniazid and rifampicin. In light of the inhibitory profile of the title compounds, enoyl-acyl carrier protein reductase (InhA) appeared to be the appropriate molecular target. A docking study of these derivatives against InhA receptor revealed favorable binding interactions. Further, in silico predicted ADME properties of these compounds 4a-4h were found to be in the acceptable ranges, including satisfactory Lipinski’s rule of five, thereby indicating their potential as drug-like molecules. Conclusion: In particular, the 1,4-DHP derivative 4f can be considered an attractive lead molecule for further exploration and development of more potent anti-TB agents as InhA inhibitors.
