beta-alkylation of secondary alcohols with primary alcohols to selectively generate alcohols by a well-defined Co catalyst is presented. Remarkably, a low catalyst loading of 0.7 mol % can be employed for the reaction. More significantly, this study represents the first Co-catalyzed switchable alcohol/ketone synthesis by simply manipulating the reaction parameters. In addition, the transformation is environmentally friendly, with water as the only byproduct.

For the first time, two new oxovanadium and dioxomolybdenum Schiff base complexes, VOL(OMe) and MoO2L, were synthesized through the reaction of a ONO tridentate Schiff base ligand (H2L) derived from the condensation of 5-bromosalicylaldehyde and nicotinic hydrazide with oxo and dioxo acetylacetonate salts of vanadium and molybdenum, [VO(acac)(2) and MoO2(acac)2], respectively. The synthesized ligand and complexes were characterized by various spectroscopic techniques like FT-IR, H-1 NMR, C-13 NMR, elemental analysis (CHN) and the most authentic single crystal X-ray diffraction analysis (SC-XRD). The geometry around the central metal ion in MoO2L was distorted octahedral as revealed by the data collected from diffraction studies. Non-covalent interactions that are responsible for crystal packing are explored by Hirshfeld surface analysis. Theoretical calculations of the synthesized compounds, carried out by DFT at B3LYP/Def2-TZVP level of theory, indicated that the calculated results are in agreement with the experimental findings. Moreover, the catalytic activities of both complexes were investigated for the selective oxidation of benzylic alcohols using urea hydrogen peroxide (UHP) in acetonitrile. (C) 2021 Elsevier Ltd. Sulfuryl fluoride is a valuable reagent for the one-pot activation and derivatization of aliphatic alcohols, but the highly reactive alkyl fluorosulfate intermediates limit both the types of reactions that can be accessed as well as the scope. Herein, we report the SO2F2-mediated alcohol substitution and deoxygenation method that relies on the conversion of fluorosulfates to alkyl halide intermediates. This strategy allows the expansion of SO2F2-mediated one-pot processes to include radical reactions, where the alkyl halides can also be exploited in the one-pot deoxygenation of primary alcohols under mild conditions (52-95% yield). This strategy can also enhance the scope of substitutions to nucleophiles that are previously incompatible with one-pot SO2F2-mediated alcohol activation and enables substitution of primary and secondary alcohols in 54-95% yield. Chiral secondary alcohols undergo a highly stereospecific (90-98% ee) double nucleophilic displacement with an overall retention of configuration.

We report the synthesis of a vanadium(V) complex characterized by FT-IR and H-1 NMR spectroscopy. The structure of the complex was established by single crystal X-ray crystallography. We also carried out the catalytic oxidation of benzyl alcohol, hetero-aryl alcohols and propargylic alcohols. Tandem synthesis of oximes from alcohols were also carried out using our vanadium(V) complex. The newly synthesized complex acts as a catalyst for oxidation reactions and tandem synthesis of oxime from alcohols. [GRAPHICS] .

Herein, we report a combination of pyrenedione (PD) and KO’Bu to achieve facile alcohol dehydrogenation under visible-light excitation, where aerobic oxygen is utilized as the terminal oxidant. The resulting carbonyl compound can be easily converted to vinyl nitriles in a single-pot reaction, at 60 degrees C in 6-8 h. This environmentally benign, organocatalytic approach has distinct advantages over transition-metal-catalyzed a-olefination of nitriles, which often operate at a significantly higher temperature for an extended reaction time.

Site-specific incorporation of deuterium into drug molecules to study and improve their biological properties is crucial for drug discovery and development. Herein, we describe a palladium-catalyzed room-temperature deuterogenolysis of carbon-oxygen bonds in alcohols and ketones with D-2 balloon for practical synthesis of deuterated pharmaceuticals and chemicals with benzyl-site (sp(3) C-H) D-incorporation. The highlights of this deoxygenative deuteration strategy are mild conditions, broad scope, practicability and high chemoselectivity. To enable the direct use of D2O, electrocatalytic D2O-splitting is adapted to in situ supply D-2 on demand. With this system, the precise incorporation of deuterium in the metabolic position (benzyl-site) of ibuprofen is demonstrated in a sustainable and practical way with D2O.

Objectives: Inconsistent findings have been reported on the link between dietary carbohydrates and lung cancer. This study aims to comprehensively evaluate the role of dietary carbohydrates on lung cancer risk. Materials and methods: The prospective study is based on the PLCO trial, which recruited 113,096 eligible participants across the United States. Participants had to have completed baseline and diet history questionnaires. The incidence of lung cancer was acquired through self-report and medical record follow-up. A multivariable logistic model adjusted for confounders was used to estimate odds ratios (ORs) and 95 % confidence intervals (CIs) of dietary carbohydrates, fiber, whole grains, glycemic index (GI) and glycemic load (GL) for lung cancer. Similar methods were applied in analyzing the carbohydrates and fiber from different food sources. Multinomial logistic models were used for sensitivity analysis with lung cancer subtypes as outcomes. Results: Dietary carbohydrates and GL were inversely associated with lung cancer incidence in the PLCO population. Among various carbohydrates, 30-g daily consumption of dietary fiber was related to a lower risk of lung cancer (fourth vs first quartile OR: 0.62, 95 % CI: 0.54-0.72) compared with 8.8-g. Furthermore, consuming whole grains 2.3 servings per day as opposed to 0.3 servings per day was associated with a lower risk of lung cancer (OR: 0.73, 95 % CI: 0.64-0.83). A higher risk of lung cancer was seen for the consumption of high-GI food (OR: 1.19, 95 % CI: 1.05?1.35) and refined carbohydrates from soft drinks (OR: 1.23, 95 % CI: 1.04?1.46). Conclusion: Carbohydrates and fiber from fruits, vegetables and whole grains are associated with lower lung cancer risk. Refined carbohydrates from processed food, such as soft drinks, appear to increase risk.

The asymmetric total synthesis of (+)-xestoquinone and (+)-adociaquinones A and B was achieved in 6-7 steps using an easily accessible meso-cyclohexadienone derivative. Though concept of oxygen bridged bimetallic catalyst for organic reaction is not well understood. Herein, we have tried to explain the concept by experimental as well as its support by full DFT study. We report here a competent protocol for dehydrogenative oxidation of benzylic alcohol using an oxygen bridged bimetallic CuMoO4 nano catalyst. Careful demonstration reveals that oxidation is not effective either with mono-metallic Cu (II) or Mo(VI); instead combination of both the metals through the oxygen bridge [Cu-O-Mo] unexpectedly and interestingly catalyzed the reaction efficiently. The new concept is strongly supported by computational DFT study. DFT study reveals dehydrogenative oxidation is preferred at copper centre over molybdenum and aromatic benzyl alcohols are greatly stabilised. Interaction barrier energy of monometallic CuO and MoO3 catalyst is much higher than bimetallic CuMoO4. Hydrogen transfer has larger barrier heights for CuO (31.5 kcal/mol) and MoO3 (40.3 kcal/mol) than bimetallic CuMoO4.

A new ionic liquid was synthesised, and its chemical structure was elucidated by FT-IR, 1D NMR, 2D NMR, and mass analyses. Some physical properties, thermal behaviour, and thermal stability of this ionic liquid were investigated. The formation of a two-protonic acid salt namely 4,4′-trimethylene-N,N’-dipiperidinium sulfate instead of 4,4′-trimethylene-N,N’-dipiperidinium hydrogensulfate was evidenced by NMR analyses. The catalytic activity of this ionic liquid was demonstrated in the esterification reaction of n-butanol and glacial acetic acid under different conditions. The desired acetate was obtained in 62-88% yield without using a Dean-Stark apparatus under optimal conditions of 10 mol-% of the ionic liquid, an alcohol to glacial acetic acid mole ratio of 1.3 : 1.0, a temperature of 75-100 degrees C, and a reaction time of 4 h. alpha-Tocopherol (alpha-TCP), a highly efficient form of vitamin E, was also treated with glacial acetic acid in the presence of the ionic liquid, and O-acetyl-alpha-tocopherol (Ac-TCP) was obtained in 88.4% yield. The separation of esters was conducted during workup without the utilisation of high-cost column chromatography. The residue and ionic liquid were used in subsequent runs after the extraction of desired products. The ionic liquid exhibited high catalytic activity even after five runs with no significant change in its chemical structure and catalytic efficiency.
