Liquid crystal elastomers (LCEs) are a class of soft active materials of increasing interest, because of their excellent actuation and optical performances. While LCEs show biomimetic mech. properties (e.g., elastic modulus and strength) that can be matched with those of soft biol. tissues, their biointegrated applications have been rarely explored, in part, due to their high actuation temperatures (typically above 60 °C) and low biaxial actuation performances (e.g., actuation strain typically below 10%). Here, unique mechanics-guided designs and fabrication schemes of LCE metamaterials are developed that allow access to unprecedented biaxial actuation strain (-53%) and biaxial coefficient of thermal expansion (-33 125 ppm K-1), significantly surpassing those (e.g., -20% and -5950 ppm K-1) reported previously. A low-temperature synthesis method with use of optimized composition ratios enables LCE metamaterials to offer reasonably high actuation stresses/strains at a substantially reduced actuation temperature (46 °C). Such biocompatible LCE metamaterials are integrated with medical dressing to develop a breathable, shrinkable, hemostatic patch as a means of noninvasive treatment. In vivo animal experiments of skin repair with both round and cross-shaped wounds demonstrate advantages of the hemostatic patch over conventional strategies (e.g., medical dressing and suturing) in accelerating skin regeneration, while avoiding scar and keloid generation.

Connah, Liam published the artcileSynergy of Key Properties Promotes Dendrimer Conjugates as Prospective Ratiometric Bioresponsive Magnetic Resonance Imaging Probes, Formula: C13H19NO3, the main research area is polyamidoamine dendrimer MRI contrast agent calcium gadolinium.

Bioresponsive or smart contrast agents (SCAs) sensitive to Ca2+ are of extreme interest in the development of functional magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) techniques as they can aid in tracking neural activity in vivo. To this end, the design of macromol. systems based on nanoscaffolds such as dendrimers functionalized with multiple MRI contrast agents has been used to conveniently increase the local concentration of paramagnetic MR reporters and slow the diffusion time of the probe, which are favorable in vivo characteristics. Moreover, previous studies with Ca-sensitive dendrimeric MRI probes revealed favorable properties crucial in the development of a ratiometric T2/T1-imaging method that provided a higher contrast-to-noise ratio compared to conventional T1- or T2-weighted imaging protocols. We therefore developed a series of novel dendrimeric MRI probes (DCAs) with differing structural properties and charge distributions. We thoroughly studied their features such as the relaxometric behavior and size change and examined their electrostatic behaviors prior to and after the addition of Ca2+. The most active DCA displayed a common increase in r1 (3.11 to 5.72 mM-1 s-1) and a remarkable increase in r2 (7.44 to 34.57 mM-1 s-1), resulting in a r2/r1 ratio increase of the factor 2.52, which is greater than what was previously achieved. These changes in r1 and r2 were followed with a hydrodynamic diameter increase from 7.1 ± 1.2 to 8.5 ± 0.7 nm upon the addition of Ca2+, along with a decrease in the neg. surface charge of the nanoparticle. Overall, our findings indicate that highly responsive DCAs can be developed only through a combination of properties such as changes in hydration and size of the mol., which are a consequence of intramol. structural and electrostatic changes in the particle. In turn, they provide a model for future preparations of responsive DCAs that can be utilized for both T1-weighted and ratiometric T2/T1-weighted imaging to visualize essential biol. processes in a dynamic fashion.

A new platform for N-glycoprotein anal. from serum that combines matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization mass spectrometry imaging (MALDI MSI) workflows with antibody slide arrays is described. Antibody panel based (APB) N-glycan imaging allows for the specific capture of N-glycoproteins by antibodies on glass slides and N-glycan anal. in a protein-specific and multiplexed manner. Development of this technique has focused on characterizing two abundant and well-studied human serum glycoproteins, alpha-1-antitrypsin and IgG. Using purified standard solutions and 1 μL samples of human serum, both glycoproteins can be immunocaptured and followed by enzymic release of N-glycans. N-Glycans are detected with a MALDI FT-ICR mass spectrometer in a concentration-dependent manner while maintaining specificity of capture. Importantly, the N-glycans detected via slide-based antibody capture were identical to that of direct anal. of the spotted standards As a proof of concept, this workflow was applied to patient serum samples from individuals with liver cirrhosis to accurately detect a characteristic increase in an IgG N-glycan. This novel approach to protein-specific N-glycan anal. from an antibody panel can be further expanded to include any glycoprotein for which a validated antibody exists. Addnl., this platform can be adapted for anal. of any biofluid or biol. sample that can be analyzed by antibody arrays.

Biswas, Kaushik published the artcileDemonstration of self-healing barrier films for vacuum insulation panels, HPLC of Formula: 7575-23-7, the main research area is epoxy self healing barrier film vacuum insulation panel.

This article presents the demonstration of a rapid self-healing system for barrier films of vacuum insulation panels (VIPs). The proposed self-healing films can improve the durability of VIPs by in-situ remediation of film defects. The self-healing concept has seen limited applications in buildings, and the current work is the first proposed application to VIPs. VIPs can achieve an order-of-magnitude lower thermal conductivity than traditional foam and fibrous building insulations. The key to the ultra-low thermal conductivity of VIPs is an evacuated core that is fully-encapsulated within impermeable barrier films. Evacuation of the core eliminates the gas conductivity, which is the dominant contributor to heat transfer in traditional insulation materials. Thus, the integrity of the VIP barrier films is critical The proposed self-healing system can seal accidental cuts and punctures to the barrier films to maintain their impermeability and, hence, the low conductivity of VIPs. Here, the proof-of-principle of a two-part chem. reaction-based self-healing system is presented, including the evaluations of reaction kinetics using chem.-structure anal. and time-dependent viscosity change, and demonstration of self-healing performance via puncture tests in a vacuum pump apparatus Multiple chem. combinations of epoxies and curing agents were investigated with respect to reaction kinetics and chem. stability. Epon 8111 as an epoxy and poly(ethyelenimine) (PEI) as a curing agent were identified as the optimum chems. with a curing time of 22 s as evaluated by an agitating stirrer experiment 1H NMR (NMR) spectra anal. identified the curing reaction occurring mainly via the Michael amine-acrylate addition The measured time-dependent viscosity change of diluted Epon 8111 and PEI solutions agreed well with a gelation model of typical epoxy curing kinetics, which predicted a very fast reaction rate for the undiluted chems. Finally, puncture tests of small-scale film specimens containing Epon 8111 and PEI in a vacuum pump system demonstrated that the self-healing reaction happens very rapidly and the healed films maintain the system vacuum.

Russo, Claudio published the artcileElectro-responsive shape-memory composites obtained via dual-curing processing, Recommanded Product: Pentaerythritol tetra(3-mercaptopropionate), the main research area is electro responsive shape memory composite dual curing.

In this work, electro-responsive shape-memory actuators were developed by incorporating a conductive heater in a dual-curing thiol-acrylate-epoxy shape-memory polymer (SMP). A conductive heater, consisting of an elec. conductive silver-ink track printed on Kapton substrate, was assembled to the SMP, taking advantage of the dual-curing processing. The shape-memory effect (SME) was activated by the heat dissipated by the Joule effect in the conductive track. Boron nitride agglomerates were dispersed in the thiol-acrylate-epoxy layers to increase thermal conductivity and achieve faster shape-recovery. A thermoelec. control unit was developed to control the shape recovery of the electro-responsive actuators and provide different activation strategies. The elec. activated SME was investigated and compared to a traditional SME based on an external heating source given by the dynamic mech. analyzer (DMA) apparatus Electro-responsive actuators were found extremely faster than the conventional SMPs based on external heating. The fastest recovery was obtained by the 15% boron nitride actuator, which recovered the 100% of the original shape in only 8 s. The thermoelec. controlling device provided an optimal control of the shape recovery speed based on the pulse width modulation of the heating current under the application of a low voltage (5 V).

Ohzono, Takuya published the artcileImpact of Crystallites in Nematic Elastomers on Dynamic Mechanical Properties and Adhesion, Recommanded Product: Pentaerythritol tetra(3-mercaptopropionate), the main research area is crystallite nematic elastomer dynamic adhesion.

Crystallite formation in crosslinked polymeric networks can generally affect their mech. properties, resulting in a higher modulus and strength than those expected from pure entropic elasticity. However, the mechanism by which crystallite formation displaces the soft elasticity of nematic liquid crystal elastomers (LCEs) is unknown. In this study, a series of main-chain nematic LCEs are investigated to clarify how their stress-strain responses are modulated by temperature-dependent crystallite formation. With increasing content of alkyl chain segments that drive crystallite formation, the higher modulus along with a hysteretic stress-strain response overlays the soft elasticity. Entropic elasticity with low hysteresis recovers in isotropic states at higher temperatures The crystallite formation ability is accompanied by an aspect of the shape memory effect, which can enhance the adhesion force through annealing in contact before detachment. The present system demonstrates that the time-dependent stress-strain response of crosslinked polymers can be dynamically tuned by controlling the balance between the crystalline, liquid crystalline, and entropic nature of the chain components. Tuneability has profound implications for dynamic mech. applications.

Herein, detailed mechanistic investigations into formamide-catalyzed nucleophilic substitution (SN) of alcs. are reported. Alkoxyiminium chlorides and hexafluorophosphates were synthesized and characterized as a key intermediate of the catalytic cycle. The determination of reaction orders and control experiments indicated that the nucleophilic attack of the formamide catalyst onto the reagent BzCl is the rate-determining step. Linear free energy relationship revealed a correlation between the quantified Lewis basicity strength of formamides by means of 11B NMR spectroscopy and their catalytic activity in SN-transformations. The observed difference in catalytic ability was attributed to the natural bond order charge, dipole moment, and Sterimol parameter B5. Importantly, this rationalization enables the prediction of the capacity of formamides to promote SN-type transformations in general.

The current scenario shows the wide applicability of coordination polymers (CPs) in various fields due to their structural topol. and tunable properties. The development of these mols. with potential application can be obtained by incorporating active metals with highly functionalized ligands under different synthetic conditions. Here in the authors report a newly synthesized dual luminescent chemosensor based on oxydiacetate functionalized strontium [Sr(C4H4O5)(H2O)3]n·nH2O by one of the simplest gel diffusion technique at room temperature The grown crystal was characterized by elemental anal., FTIR, UV-Visible Spectroscopy, Single Crystal x-ray Diffraction and TG/DTA measurements. Single Crystal x-ray diffraction studies of the synthesized CP revealed a monoclinic crystal system with space group P21/c. The luminescent properties of the synthesized analyte were analyzed from photoluminescence (PL) spectrum. The coordination polymer displayed an emission of 371 nm upon excitation of 313 nm. The luminescence titration experiments showed that the synthesized coordination polymer dispersed in water, can selectively sense Cu(II) metal ions as well as the Cr(VI) oxyanions [CrO42-/Cr2O72-] from the aqueous media with a detection limit of 0.2536μM and 0.1060μM, resp. The grown strontium based CP can thus be used as an effective dual luminescent chemosensor for the detection and probing of both Cu2+ and Cr(VI) oxyanions (CrO42-/Cr2O72-) in aqueous medium.
