The implementation of non-noble metals mediated chemistry is a major goal in homogeneous catalysis. Borrowing hydrogen/hydrogen autotransfer (BH/HA) reaction, as a straightforward and sustainable synthetic method, has attracted considerable attention in the development of non-noble metal catalysts. Herein, we report a tungsten-catalyzed N-alkylation reaction of anilines with primary alcohols via BH/HA. This phosphine-free W(phen)(CO)(4) (phen=1,10-phenthroline) system was demonstrated as a practical and easily accessible in-situ catalysis for a broad range of amines and alcohols (up to 49 examples, including 16 previously undisclosed products). Notably, this tungsten system can tolerate numerous functional groups, especially the challenging substrates with sterically hindered substituents, or heteroatoms. Mechanistic insights based on experimental and computational studies are also provided.

Background: Tuberculosis remains one of the most deadly infectious diseases worldwide due to the emergence of multi-drug resistance (MDR) and extensively drug resistance (XDR) strains of Mycobacterium tuberculosis (MTB). Aims: Currently, available drugs are getting resistant and toxic. Hence, there is an urgent need for the development of potent molecules to treat tuberculosis. Materials and Methods: Herein, the screening of a total of eight symmetrical 1,4-dihydropyridine (1,4-DHP) derivatives (4a-4h) was carried out for whole-cell anti-TB activity against the susceptible H37Rv and MDR strains of MTB. Results and Discussion: Most of the compounds exhibited moderate to excellent activity against the susceptible H37Rv. Moreover, the most promising compound 4f (against H37Rv) having para-trifluoromethyl phenyl group at 4-position and bis para-methoxy benzyl ester group at 3- and 5-positions of 1,4- dihydropyridine pharmacophore, exhibited no toxicity, but demonstrated weak activity against MTB strains resistant to isoniazid and rifampicin. In light of the inhibitory profile of the title compounds, enoyl-acyl carrier protein reductase (InhA) appeared to be the appropriate molecular target. A docking study of these derivatives against InhA receptor revealed favorable binding interactions. Further, in silico predicted ADME properties of these compounds 4a-4h were found to be in the acceptable ranges, including satisfactory Lipinski’s rule of five, thereby indicating their potential as drug-like molecules. Conclusion: In particular, the 1,4-DHP derivative 4f can be considered an attractive lead molecule for further exploration and development of more potent anti-TB agents as InhA inhibitors.

Hydrogen production can be promoted by replacing sluggish oxygen evolution reaction (OER) with a thermodynamically more favorable reaction, the primary oxidation reaction of benzyl alcohol to benzaldehyde. On a Bi2MoO6@TiO(2)NTA photocathode, the conversion of benzyl alcohol to benzaldehyde is realized with the selectivity of 100 %. This is originated from enhanced adsorption and activation of benzyl alcohol on this photoanode, as confirmed from tested by in situ FTIR techniques. The electrons generated during such a controllable and selective primary oxidation reaction is then utilized as the source for synergistical hydrogen production. The amount of generated hydrogen is then 5.5 times higher than that when OER is used. The efficiency for such hydrogen production is as high as 85 %. The proposed strategy combines solar energy and biomass for the efficient production of the valuable raw material – benzaldehyde as well as green energy source – hydrogen.

In this study, a green deep eutectic solvent (DES) was synthesized at room temperature-based choline chloride (ChCl) and 4-methoxybenzyl alcohol (Anisyl alcohol (An-OH)) used as the conductive binder for modification of carbon paste electrode (CPE). In addition, single wall carbon nanotubes decorated by ZrO2 (SWCNT-ZrO2) nanocomposite was synthesized by the hydrothermal method and characterized by field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDAX), and X-ray powder diffraction (XRD) analytical techniques. The DES and SWCNT-ZrO2 were used as a binder and modifier in the carbon paste electrode structure to form CPE/DES/SWCNT-ZrO2 as an electrochemical sensor for the simultaneous determination of paracetamol and rizatriptan as two anti-migration drugs for the first time. In the direction of optimal experimental conditions, the effective parameters such as pH, amount of modifier, and electrolyte type were optimized. Under these conditions, the limits of detection (LODs) 0.7 nM and 9.0 nM; linear dynamic ranges (LDRs) 0.003?100 and 0.08?100; and relative standard deviations (RSDs for n = 5) 1.63 and 1.52 were sequentially found for rizatriptan and paracetamol. The results indicate that the sensor can be applied for the detection of trace amounts of paracetamol and rizatriptan in clinical and pharmaceutical samples.

Noble-metal-free photocatalysts with high and stable performance provide an environmentally-friendly and cost-efficient route for green organic synthesis. In this work, CdS nanoparticles with small particle size and different amount were successfully deposited on the surface of covalent organic frameworks (COFs). The deposition of suitable content of CdS on COFs could not only modify the light adsorption ability and the intrinsic electronic properties, but also enhance the photocatalytic activity and cycling performance of CdS for the selective oxidation of aromatic alcohols under visible light. Especially, COF/CdS-3 exhibited the highest yield (97.1%) of benzaldehyde which is approximately 2.5 and 15.9 times as that of parental CdS and COF, respectively. The results show that the combination of CdS and COF can improve the utilization of visible light and the separation of photo-generated charge carriers, and COF with the pi-conjugated system as supports for CdS nanoparticles could provide efficient electron transport channels and improve the photocatalytic performance. Therefore, this kind of COF-supported photocatalysts with accelerated photo-induced electrons and charge-carrier separation between semiconductors possesses great potentials in future green organic synthesis. Thiobenzoic acid (TBA) can serve as a single-electron reducing agent under photoirradiation from a blue light-emitting diode, in the presence of appropriate electron acceptors, and the resulting sulfur-centered radical species undergoes hydrogen atom abstraction. This dual-role catalysis by TBA enables regioselectivie C alpha-H arylation of benzylamines, benzyl alcohols, and ethers, as well as dihydroimidazoles, with cyano(hetero)arenes in good yield, without the need for a transition-metal photocatalyst and/or synthetically elaborated organic dyes.

BACKGROUND: Accelerated translation of real-world interventions for hypertension management is critical to improving cardiovascular outcomes and reducing disparities. OBJECTIVE: To determine whether a positive deviance approach would improve blood pressure (BP) control across diverse health systems. DESIGN: Quality improvement study using 1-year cross sections of electronic health record data over 5 years (2013-2017). PARTICIPANTS: Adults >= 18 with hypertension with two visits in 2 years with at least one primary care visit in the last year (N = 114,950 at baseline) to a primary care practice in Better Health Partnership, a regional health improvement collaborative. INTERVENTIONS: Identification of a positive deviant and dissemination of this system’s best practices for control of hypertension (i.e., accurate/repeat BP measurement; timely follow-up; outreach; standard treatment algorithm; and communication curriculum) using 3 different intensities (low: Learning Collaborative events describing the best practices; moderate: Learning Collaborative events plus consultation when requested; and high: Learning Collaborative events plus practice coaching). MAIN MEASURES: We used a weighted linear model to estimate the pre- to post-intervention average change in BP control (< 140/90 mmHg) for 35 continuously participating clinics. KEY RESULTS: BP control post-intervention improved by 7.6% [95% confidence interval (CI) 6.0-9.1], from 67% in 2013 to 74% in 2017. Subgroups with the greatest absolute improvement in BP control included Medicaid (12.0%, CI 10.5-13.5), Hispanic (10.5%, 95% CI 8.4-12.5), and African American (9.0%, 95% CI 7.7-10.4). Implementation intensity was associated with improvement in BP control (high: 14.9%, 95% CI 0.2-19.5; moderate: 5.2%, 95% CI 0.8-9.5; low: 0.2%, 95% CI-3.9 to 4.3). CONCLUSIONS: Employing a positive deviance approach can accelerate translation of real-world best practices into care across diverse health systems in the context of a regional health improvement collaborative (RHIC). Using this approach within RHICs nationwide could translate to meaningful improvements in cardiovascular morbidity and mortality. The oxidation of alcohols to aldehydes is a powerful reaction pathway for obtaining valuable fine chemicals used in pharmaceuticals and biologically active compounds. Although many oxidants can oxidize alcohols, only a few hydrogen peroxide oxidations can be employed to continuously synthesize aldehydes in high yields using a liquid-liquid two-phase flow reactor, despite the possibility of the application toward a safe and rapid multi-step synthesis. We herein report the continuous flow synthesis of (E)-cinnamaldehyde from (E)-cinnamyl alcohol in 95%-98% yields with 99% selectivity for over 5 days by the selective oxidation of hydrogen peroxide using a catalyst column in which Pt is dispersed in SiO2. The active species for the developed selective oxidation is found to be zero-valent Pt(0) from the X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy measurements of the Pt surface before and after the oxidation. Using Pt black diluted with SiO2 as a catalyst to retain the Pt(0) species with the optimal substrate and H2O2 introduction rate not only enhances the catalytic activity but also maintains the activity during the flow reaction. Optimizing the contact time of the substrate with Pt and H2O2 using a flow reactor is important to proceed with the selective oxidation to prevent the catalytic H2O2 decomposition.
