A convenient protocol for the one-pot synthesis of quinazolin-4(3H)-ones using palladium(II) complexes via dehydrogenative coupling of readily available benzyl alcohols and 2-aminobenzamide has been described. New structurally related Pd(II) N boolean AND O chelating complexes of general configuration [Pd(L)Cl(PPh3)] (where L = dimethylamino benzoylhydrazone ligands) have been designed and synthesized. The formation of the complexes has been recognized by analytical and spectral methods (FT-IR, NMR, HR-MS). The presence of a square-planar geometry around the palladium(II) ion was confirmed by single crystal X-ray diffraction study. A wide range of substituted quinazolinones have been successfully achieved from a diverse range of benzyl alcohols in good to excellent yields using 1.0 mol % of catalyst loading under aerobic conditions. Furthermore, control experiments reveal that the dehydrogenative coupling reaction involves initially the formation of an aldehyde intermediate and subsequent formation of a cyclic aminal intermediate.

Sulfuryl fluoride is a valuable reagent for the one-pot activation and derivatization of aliphatic alcohols, but the highly reactive alkyl fluorosulfate intermediates limit both the types of reactions that can be accessed as well as the scope. Herein, we report the SO2F2-mediated alcohol substitution and deoxygenation method that relies on the conversion of fluorosulfates to alkyl halide intermediates. This strategy allows the expansion of SO2F2-mediated one-pot processes to include radical reactions, where the alkyl halides can also be exploited in the one-pot deoxygenation of primary alcohols under mild conditions (52-95% yield). This strategy can also enhance the scope of substitutions to nucleophiles that are previously incompatible with one-pot SO2F2-mediated alcohol activation and enables substitution of primary and secondary alcohols in 54-95% yield. Chiral secondary alcohols undergo a highly stereospecific (90-98% ee) double nucleophilic displacement with an overall retention of configuration.

The implementation of non-noble metals mediated chemistry is a major goal in homogeneous catalysis. Borrowing hydrogen/hydrogen autotransfer (BH/HA) reaction, as a straightforward and sustainable synthetic method, has attracted considerable attention in the development of non-noble metal catalysts. Herein, we report a tungsten-catalyzed N-alkylation reaction of anilines with primary alcohols via BH/HA. This phosphine-free W(phen)(CO)(4) (phen=1,10-phenthroline) system was demonstrated as a practical and easily accessible in-situ catalysis for a broad range of amines and alcohols (up to 49 examples, including 16 previously undisclosed products). Notably, this tungsten system can tolerate numerous functional groups, especially the challenging substrates with sterically hindered substituents, or heteroatoms. Mechanistic insights based on experimental and computational studies are also provided.

An efficient magnetically recyclable bimetallic catalyst by anchoring copper and manganese complexes on the Fe(3)O(4)NPs was prepared and named as Fe3O4@Cu-Mn. It was founded as a powerful catalyst for the domino one-pot oxidative benzimidazole and Biginelli reactions from benzyl alcohols as a green protocol in the presence of air, under solvent-free and mild conditions. Fe3O4@Cu-Mn NPs were well characterized by FT-IR, XRD, FE-SEM, TEM, VSM, TGA, EDX, DLS, and ICP analyses. The optimum range of parameters such as time, temperature, amount of catalyst, and solvent were investigated for the domino one-pot benzimidazole and Biginelli reactions to find the optimum reaction conditions. The catalyst was compatible with a variety of benzyl alcohols, which provides favorable products with good to high yields for all of derivatives. Hot filtration and Hg poisoning tests from the nanocatalyst revealed the stability, low metal leaching and heterogeneous nature of the catalyst. To prove the synergistic and cooperative effect of the catalytic system, the various homologues of the catalyst were prepared and then applied to a model reaction separately. Finally, the catalyst could be filtered from the reaction mixture simply, and reused for five consecutive cycles with a minimum loss in catalytic activity and performance. Graphic A new magnetically recyclable Cu/Mn bimetallic catalyst has been developed for domino one-pot oxidation-condensation of benzimidazole and Biginelli reactions from alcohols.

beta-alkylation of secondary alcohols with primary alcohols to selectively generate alcohols by a well-defined Co catalyst is presented. Remarkably, a low catalyst loading of 0.7 mol % can be employed for the reaction. More significantly, this study represents the first Co-catalyzed switchable alcohol/ketone synthesis by simply manipulating the reaction parameters. In addition, the transformation is environmentally friendly, with water as the only byproduct.

The inhibition performance of the newly synthesized Ethylene bis [(2-hydroxy-5,1,3-phenylene) bismethylene] tetraphosphonic acid (ETPA) toward carbon steel in 3% NaCl was investigated at different concentrations using potentiodynamic polarization (PDP) and impedance spectroscopy (EIS) methods. It was found that the inhibition capability was increased with increasing inhibitor dose and reach 92% at 10(-3) mol/L. Also, Polarization curves showed that ETPA acts as a mixed type inhibitor with predominantly control of anodic reaction. The new inhibitor was investigated by different spectroscopic methods such as H-1, C-13 and (PNMR)-P-31. The quantum parameters such as absolute electronegativity (chi), energy gap Delta(E) (E-HOMO-E-LUMO), global softness (sigma), global hardness (eta), electrophilicity index (omega) and the number of transfer electrons (Delta N) are calculated by density functional theory (DFT). The experimental also correlated with density functional theory results. The calculations show that ETPA has high density of negative charge located on the oxygen atoms of the phosphonate group facilitating the adsorption of ETPA on the surface of carbon steel. The inhibition efficiency of ETPA was discussed in terms of blocking of electrode surface by adsorption of ETPA molecules through active centers. The adsorption of ETPA on the surface of carbon steel obeyed the Langmuir isotherm paradigm. (C) 2021 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

2-Aryl-2,3-dihydroquinolin-4(1H)-ones have recently been identified as important structures with potent biological activities such as antitumor and antidiabetic effect. Herein, a total of 25 novel N-Tf 2-aryl-2,3-dihydroquinolin-4(1H)-ones were expediently synthesized via the oxidative aza-Michael cyclization of N-Tf-2 ‘-aminodihydrochalcones by ligand-free palladium(II) catalysis. This study presents a new synthetic approach to yield N-Tf 2-aryl-2,3-dihydroquinolin-4(1H)-ones, which can be easily transformed into pharmacologically interesting aza-flavanones and other N-heterocycles, such as quinolines and tetrahydroquinolines, in yields up to 84 %. This methodology has various advantages, which includes short reaction times under mild conditions and suitable functional group tolerance. Furthermore, a plausible mechanism was proposed and demonstrated by kinetic analysis.

The neutral trichloro[hydrotris(1-pyrazolyl)methane]vanadium(III) [VCl3(Tpm)] (Tpm = HC(pz)(3); pz = pyrazolyl) C-scorpionate complex was immobilized on amine-functionalized mesoporous silica (aptesSBA-15) via an impregnation method forming the [VCl3(Tpm)]@aptesSBA-15 composite. The immobilization of the vanadium compound was confirmed by several characterization techniques, namely SEM/EDS, powder XRD, FT-IR/ATR, ICP and BET surface area analysis, revealing the successful incorporation of the complex, and confirming the structural and morphological preservation of the porous support and the vanadium complex. The vanadium composite was tested as heterogeneous catalyst for the peroxidative oxidation of benzyl alcohol under mild conditions and its catalytic performance was compared to that of the analogous homogeneous [VCl3(Tpm)] complex. The catalytic studies were extended to other substrates. The effect of various parameters, such as amount and type of oxidant, catalyst and additives, temperature and reaction time were investigated allowing to reach overall yields of ca. 60% and turnover numbers (TONs) up to ca. 7.6 x 10(3). The results obtained demonstrated the higher performance of the heterogeneous catalyst using much less [VCl3(Tpm)] complex under a solvent-free system. Furthermore, consecutive reaction cycles could be performed, showing its recycling capacity. Structural stability was also investigated, indicating the viability of the vanadium C-scorpionate composite as catalyst for other oxidative reactions with high industrial interest.

A straightforward and selective reduction of nitroarenes with various alcohols was efficiently developed using an iron catalyst via a hydrogen transfer methodology. This protocol led specifically to imines in 30-91% yields, with a good functional group tolerance. Noticeably, starting from o-nitroaniline derivatives, in the presence of alcohols, benzimidazoles can be obtained in 64-72% yields when the reaction was performed with an additional oxidant, DDQ, and quinoxalines were prepared from 1,2-diols in 28-96% yields. This methodology, unprecedented at iron for imines, also provides a sustainable alternative for the preparation of quinoxalines and benzimidazoles.

Our laboratory has developed catalysts based on earth abundant titanium for asymmetric reactions including intramolecular hydroamination. Previously, we showed that titanium complexes of imine diol ligands showed improved enantioselectivity relative to complexes with bidentate amino alcohol ligands. As the catalyst with the highest selectivity had di-tert-butyl substitution, we sought to increase the steric protection by preparing three new ligands with diaryl substitution. These ligands were readily prepared in two steps: first, synthesis of diaryl substituted salicylaldehydes by a Suzuki coupling and second, a Schiff base condensation with a chiral amino alcohol. After characterizing the ligands, in situ hydroamination/cyclization with 6-methyl-hepta-4,5-dienylamine was carried out at temperatures ranging from 105 degrees C to 135 degrees C to give exclusively 2-(2-methyl-propenyl)-pyrrolidine with enantioselectivity up to 22 %ee. Unexpected dimerization of the catalyst resulted in reduced activity, so the reaction required a catalyst loading of 10-20%. (C) 2021 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.
